Estimating wage losses of displaced workers in Germany

چکیده
Ž . This paper employs the German Socioeconomic Panel GSOEP and the social insurance Ž . file IAB to study the effect of displacement on reemployment earnings of West German workers. On average, wages of the displaced decline only slightly upon reemployment. For workers in the IAB sample in 1986, we find that the lowest earnings quartile, in which Ž . displacement is concentrated, even gains slightly q2% , while wage growth losses for the Ž . upper three quartiles are comparable with US evidence y17% . Large wage losses are persistent and associated with changes of industry, but not of firm. A surprising finding is that displacement in Germany is often associated with later recall, in contrast to the North American experience. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Wages and Worker Displacement in Germany
This paper investigates the effect of displacement on wages of socially insured German workers who became unemployed in 1986. Because detailed information on job loss is unavailable, displacement status is predicted using a probit estimated on the German Socioeconomic Panel. In contrast to US findings, post-displacement wages decline only slightly upon reemployment. The lowest earnings quartile...

The objective of this paper is to provide a comparative assessment of the consequences of worker displacement in France and the United States. I estimate wage losses of displaced workers in the two countries and examine the relative contribution of two important sources of post-displacement wage adjustments. The first one relates to the loss of seniority-accumulated firmspecific earnings potent...
متن کاملWage Losses of Displaced Workers in France and the US ? Theory and Comparative Evidence PRELIMINARY
This paper develops a theoretical search framework to analyse the wage losses experienced by displaced workers. We underline the importance of accounting for two different sources of wage losses whose consequences might differ, namely the loss of rents earned on their predisplacement job and the loss of accumulated firm-specific human capital. We then turn to the measurement and decomposition o...

متن کاملTraining, Technological Changes, and Displacement
By matching industry/occupation data on training to displaced worker data from the Current Population Surveys, this paper analyzes why many older workers were displaced by technological changes in the 1990s, and why these workers incurred large earnings losses. When technological changes depreciate the existing stock of firm-specific human capital, older workers who receive higher wages from th...
